History

In the middle of the 1800's

the conditions for the iron industry were changed when new and rational production methods were introduced. Hot rolling replaced the old-fashioned hammering forging, whereby products of higher quality could be produced in less time.

In the village of Morgårdshammar, bar iron and other forgings have been produced since the 1700th century. The source of power which made this possible almost 400 years ago was the river running through the industrial area of Morgårdshammar.

Around 1850, the demand grew for machines and other engineering products and Morgårdshammar changed over from making iron to making engineering products to serve the metallurgical industry. At the time of building the first workshop in 1856, specialisation started towards a product range which today has developed into the speciality of Morgårdshammar AB - rolling mills for long products. The first major break-through for rolling mills came with Ernst von Zweigbergk. During the 1870´s, he designed the first universal rolling mill in which flat iron with sharp edges and close tolerances could be produced.

The Morgårdshammar housingless roll stands were a revolutionary way of thinking and were patented in most industrial countries
